I lay/slept/rested there, frozen in fear/by terror/with dread. The shadows danced/shifted/writhed around me, stretching and twisting like living creatures/hungry serpents/sinister tendrils. Every creak of the house/cabin/old structure, every sigh of the wind outside my window/door/small opening, sent chills down my spine/through my veins/into my bones. I tried to rationalize the sounds, but a deep, primal fear/terror/anxiety gripped me.
